Stu Unger: Poker Player

The basic reason why Mr. Ungar changed from gin rummy to poker was that Stu was a little too skilled at it. So good was he, that no one could stand up to him. Even the apparently professionals who were supposed to be the greatest at gin rummy were demolished when they played with Mr. Ungar. One such gin rummy professionals was Harry Stein, called, "Yonkie". Harry Stein suffered such a humiliating blow at the hands of stu that he apparently quit competing in it professionally and never showed up at a gin rummy tournament.

Certainly, with a reputation like that it wasn't long before people became weary of competing against Stu Ungar. He could not find any games and in his desperation he started doing something no one had done prior. Stu issued starting handicaps to potential adversaries in the wish that they might just play with him if they thought they held an advantage. He deliberately began from a bad position and one story has it that stu even competed with a constant bad egg. Mid game, he get advice that the absconder was at it yet again but stu stated that he was aware of the chicanery and he would still come away with a win, which he did, of course.

The same trend followed Stu Ungar to sin city. He won so much that the casinos began requesting that he not to wager on their casinos anymore. The basis for it was that other casino clients would not be seated at the table if Stu was playing.

Stu Ungar is remembered better for his abilities in holdem poker but he always said that he was a whole lot more accomplished at gin rummy.

He beat Doyle Brunson in the WSOP in 1980 and became the youngest world champion. Due to his looks that made him seem far younger than he really was, he was nicknamed, "The Kid".
